I have been wagering poker now for about five years, I have bet cards my entire life starting with games of Gin Rummy for pennies with my Grand Mother, to all of the various types of Brag and general random games such as Go Fish, Crash and one so beautifully called, card on head game. I used to usually win, whatever game we were playing and even though I liked to call it skill, it was extremely difficult to justify considering the randomness of the games we were betting, so I was happy to accept I was having a long run of good fortune.
Then came Poker, or much more importantly Holdem Poker, made popular by a group of Texas card gamblers in the 60’s and since developed into one of the biggest card phenomena ever witnessed. Poker is absolutely the new black, it truly is super cool with a lot of of the world’s top celebrities racing to have their name associated with it. Just a quick flick via the TV channels nowadays and it is possible to not escape from poker, and naturally there’s the fabled WSOP, the Holy Grail and Mecca all rolled into one for every individual player.
So with all of this new found popularity, with so quite a few Television shows dedicated to poker, and magazine and book shelves loaded up with high quality material written by the leading minds on poker, when are men and women going to understand that this casino game is all about position!?
Perhaps I should not get so worked up about this, after all the more persons who have difficulty with the subtle tactics and strategies needed for winning regularly at Holdem, the better it’s for everyone else, appropriate? I mean, if they cannot be bothered to look at all of the readily available facts about why position is so essential, why really should we bother? We should just be glad there’s another fish at the table!
It’s true, we need to not encourage idleness with advice and assist. However, I liken this to a welcoming game of football. Granted the stakes are not so great, but when you observe a gambler struggling, you guide them, offer them a number of advice, ultimately showing them a way to like, really like and be thankful for the game as much as you. I’m calling on all house players to do the same thing with their poker friends who have not quite grasped the subtleties of betting position. Aid them to grow their respect for the game. Needless to say, do not attempt to try this one in your local gambling establishment, the sharks won’t take pleasure in you instructing their supper how to swim!
